Firefly in Summer

Firefly in Summer by Primarycolors
Summary: Edward finds himself back in the little beach town of his childhood when he inherits the local bar from his uncle. The elusive, pretty girl next door has killer legs, a sketchbook and secrets that are slowly eating her alive.

Remember when you read Beyond Time by tkegel and you were, like, siiiiiiiiigh? It's so romantic. Well, that's how I feel about Firefly in Summer. I am a sucker for deeply romantic plots and, even more so, tragic, romantic plots. I cried for twenty minutes after Titanic ended and my best friend just held me in the theater. I have it bad. "Jack, there's a boat, Jack." All the tears.

Firefly in Summer is unbelievably romantic, and I have to spoil something for you in order to explain. I will tell you, it was spoiled for me too and I was a little miffed about it, but it ended up being okay. I thought the story was long going in, but knowing what was going to happen made me okay with the length because there's a lot that needs to happen. So, from here on out, I will tell you something spoilerish. This is the point of no return. But regardless of whether or not you read the rest of this review, I think you should read the story, because gah! you just should! Romance and beaches and tragedy and art and small towns. Just beautiful.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Firefly in Summer is a time travel piece. Edward's uncle and father figure passes away, he inherits his uncle's bar and moves in. Once settled, he meets next door neighbor: shy, quiet, reserved, secretive Bella. Bella and Edward fall madly in love as he strips away her secrets, and then tragedy strikes, sending Edward back in time. There's something so romantic about a man who travels time for the woman he loves. Why can't my husband do that? Sigh. :)

But I digress . . .

If you're like me, you've read time travel stories that are terrible. They're poorly plotted, or the reason for the time travel is bogus, or there are repercussions that suck sweaty butt after the traveler returns. And it just makes the whole story awful. This story is the opposite of awful, and it has none of those crappy issues. Yay! It's perfect as a time travel story.

The most fascinating thing about this tale (other than time travel, duh!) is that both Edward and Bella have three personalities in a sense due to the time periods they are from and/or visit. I don't know how the author did it, but they are all distinct, and it's brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. I love every version of the characters.

Every character is so well written from Edward and Bella to the town grocer, Ms. Cope to Dr. Shan, the time travel specialist, to Charlie to Jake, the bartender, etc. Each one serves a purpose. Each one is fully developed. Each one is brilliant.

This fic will pull you in and hold your attention. It will make you cry sad tears and happy tears. It will make you want to kick some ass, and you'll cheer when Edward and Emmett do just that. It will make you want to move to a small town so you can hang up lights for Ms. Cope. It will make you want to live on the beach and enjoy the simple beauties of life. It will make you want to better yourself as a human being and appreciate the ones you love in your life.

This fic, while it has some technical errors, is stunning. It is now on my top five. I loved it. The romance, plot and characters are all brilliant. Read it and get your tragic romance on. You will not regret it.

And if you are a visual person like me, you can visit the author's We Heart It set  for this fic. There are some beautiful photos there that help illustrate the story.

Low smut. High romance. Team Jacob safe.
